The Modern University Library

Eline Bos: “Since 1880, the University Library has been the place where you can find literature and study in silence. The differences between the photograph of the study area from 1974 and those of today are subtle. The biggest changes have taken place behind the computer screens. Whereas in 1974 everyone searched for literature in the large card cabinets, this now happens in the online catalogue. Consulting sources is also largely done digitally.”
“Recently, the library has undergone a major metamorphosis to meet the needs of current users. With the help of books, heritage and art, the University Library has created an inspiring study environment. Together with various VU Amsterdam communities, special theme libraries have been set up, such as the Pride Library, the Decolonisation LAB and the Mindful Library. The Library Lounge is now located on the first floor as a meeting place for students, staff and alumni. It doesn't have to be quiet in this study area where lectures, workshops and film evenings are organised.”
Eline Bos works as curator of Academic Heritage at the University Library of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She collects and cares for special objects from the history of the university. These artifacts are used in research, education and in exhibitions at various locations on campus.
