Week in pictures
Süleyman Tosun studied Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) and Law and Politics of International Security (LPIS) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Süleyman currently works at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since August, he has been working at the Dutch Embassy in Dakar, where he focuses on climate, water, coastal protection and renewable energy in the economics department.
Mon What's going on at home?
Every day at the embassy unfolds in a unique way, with a dynamic mix of experiences. Some days we are on exciting missions and guide guests from the Netherlands. Other days, we're glued to our desks, poring over paperwork. Monday, however, stands out. That is the gateway to our week, filled with phone calls to our colleagues in The Hague, where we align with the Dutch focus and expectations.
Tue World in pictures
On Tuesday, the embassy's policy experts meet to take stock of the global political and social events of the past week. Our field of vision extends beyond Senegal and includes Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Mauritania and Cape Verde. We dot the i's and cross the t's of key events in these countries so that we can better understand our regional impact.
Tue Good preparation is half the battle
This week I am preparing for my visit to Guinea. Preparing for such a visit requires a lot of administrative work, but also strategic thinking about what I want to achieve during the visit. In various conversations with people in The Hague and meetings here, I try to make sure that I get the most out of my visit and speak to the right counterparts.
Wed Knowledge exchange
Wednesday is our time to share knowledge and expertise. We diligently follow the projects funded by the Netherlands and immerse ourselves in the most important developments in Senegal, from climate change and water management to coastal protection and sustainable energy. To stay informed and inspire collaboration, we host experts, diplomats, and programme implementers at the embassy. It's a two-pronged journey – learning about Senegal's progress and recognising where Dutch expertise can fuel growth.
Thu The Dream Team Unleashed
With a dedicated team of 27 people, we are committed to the Netherlands in Senegal. We nurture strong partnerships with Senegal and its people, address societal issues and demonstrate our unwavering support. This month, we have united in pink in the fight against breast cancer. Our team, a mix of local Senegalese and Dutch expats, keeps the embassy running and helps Dutch citizens and companies in six countries.
Fri Adventures in the field
My role in Senegal is to discover the heartbeat of the country, witness the development of programmes, and connect with Senegalese people, authorities, NGOs, entrepreneurs and experts. Site visits offer a glimpse into the diverse landscapes, regional differences, and cultural richness of the country. The visits give me the privilege of understanding people's dreams, trials, and efforts – the foundation upon which we build positive change.
Sat Cleaning up!
Weekends are usually a break from work, but once in a while we participate in important events. The Beach Clean Up is one such occasion. As part of Team Europe, the ambassador and I joined forces with an EU initiative to combat beach pollution. Under the scorching sun, we enjoy camaraderie and make a collective effort to restore the beaches to their pristine glory.
Sat Odyssey of the World Traveler
Going abroad for work is an intense experience that opens doors to new cultures and histories. When I started at the ministry, I had limited knowledge of the West African region. Now I’m immersed in the vibrant dynamics of West Africa. It is a privilege to explore the world and cultures through your profession and meet new people from different backgrounds, even if it comes with a great challenge: the uprooting of your old life and having to build a new life in a foreign country with a new language.
Sun On a different wave
Senegal's beaches are a haven for avid surfers, and I'm no exception. During my stay here, I perfect my surfing skills while enjoying the sunny weather and exhilarating waves of Dakar. It's the perfect way to unwind and connect with the boundless energy of the ocean.
